What is Expound
Expound is an AI-powered Bible study companion that provides historical, cultural, and linguistic context for any passage of Scripture. It helps you understand what the text meant to its original audience — the who, when, where, and why behind every verse.
Who wrote it, when, and what was happening in the world. Empires, exiles, and everything that shaped the text.
The customs, beliefs, and context the audience lived in. What was obvious to them that isn't to us.
Original Greek and Hebrew. What the words actually mean, and why the translation choices matter.
How It Works

Treasury of Scripture Knowledge cross-references link every verse to related passages across the Bible. Over 500,000 connections at your fingertips.
See the original Greek and Hebrew words, their definitions, and how they're used elsewhere in Scripture. Understand the text as it was written.
Philosophy
We show context, not meaning.
Background, not application.
The interpretation is yours through the Holy Spirit.
The first pillar is the tallest and brightest: The Word itself. The second is context — history, language, authorship. The third is the faintest: the Spirit’s domain. Intentionally so. The design is theology.
Expound will never tell you what a verse means for your life. Never express denominational bias. Never offer devotional interpretation. These are not limitations — they are the product.

FAQ
Expound is an AI-powered Bible study companion that provides historical, cultural, and linguistic context for any passage of Scripture. It helps you understand what the text meant to its original audience — the who, when, where, and why behind every verse.
Context is the scholar's job. Meaning is the Spirit's. Expound deliberately provides factual background — authorship, dates, geography, cultural customs, original language — without telling you what a verse should mean for your personal life. That space is left intentionally open.
Expound currently uses the King James Version (KJV), which is in the public domain. Support for additional translations including ESV, NIV, NLT, and NASB is planned for future updates.
When you tap a verse, Expound sends the reference to a secure server that generates factual historical and cultural context using AI. A theological firewall ensures the AI never offers personal interpretation, devotional content, or denominational bias. The constraint is enforced server-side and cannot be overridden.
Yes. Your highlights, notes, bookmarks, and reading history are stored locally on your device. Expound does not sell or share your personal data. When you request context for a verse, only the verse reference is sent to the server — never your notes or highlights.
Long-press on any verse text to select it. A floating action bar will appear with five highlight colors — Gold, Sage, Sky, Rose, and Lavender. Tap a color to highlight. You can also save, add a note, copy, or share from the same bar.
Cross-references connect related passages across the Bible. Expound uses the Treasury of Scripture Knowledge (TSK), a public domain dataset with over 500,000 cross-reference connections. Tap the Cross-Refs tab in the context drawer to see passages related to the verse you're studying.
