Privacy Policy

Expound ("we," "our," or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and safeguard your information when you use the Expound mobile application (the "App").
Information We Collect
Account Information. When you create an account, we collect your email address, a display name, and a password. This information is used for authentication and account management.
Bible Passage and Question Data. Expound's context cards, word definitions, and Search answers are generated by an AI model. To generate them, the App sends the relevant Bible verse reference, the verse text, and (for a word study) the specific word you tapped to our server, which passes it to our AI provider. If you type a question in Search, the text of your question is sent the same way. This data is used only to generate the response you asked for. See "Third-Party Services" below for how our AI provider handles this data.
Card Reports. If you flag an AI-generated card as inaccurate or off-firewall, we store the card's text, the reason you selected, and any note you choose to write, on our servers. This is reviewed by hand so we can correct the underlying prompt and add the case to our permanent regression tests.
Purchase Data. If you subscribe to Expound Pro, your purchase is processed by Apple through the App Store. We use RevenueCat to manage subscription entitlements. RevenueCat identifies you by your Expound account ID (the same internal identifier Supabase assigns your account), not your name or email. We receive confirmation of your subscription status but do not have access to your payment details (credit card number, billing address, etc.).
Information Stored on Your Device
The following data stays on your device and is not uploaded to our servers:
- Highlights, saved verses, and notes
- Reading position and search history
- Profile photo (avatar)
- Theme and font preferences
- Cached context cards and definitions
Information We Do Not Collect
- We do not use analytics or tracking tools
- We do not collect device identifiers or location data
- We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with third parties
- We do not serve advertisements
Third-Party Services
Expound uses the following third-party services:
- Anthropic — Expound's AI features (context cards, word definitions, and Search) are powered by Anthropic's Claude models. The Bible passage, verse text, tapped word, or question you submit is sent to Anthropic solely to generate the response, subject to Anthropic's own data handling terms. Anthropic Privacy Policy

Data Retention
We retain your account information for as long as your account is active. You may delete your account at any time from within the App (Profile > Delete Account). When you delete your account:
- Your authentication record and other server-side account data (including any card reports tied to your account) are permanently deleted
- Data stored locally on your device, such as highlights, notes, reading position, cached context, and your profile photo, is not automatically cleared and remains on the device. Deleting the App removes it
- Account deletion is irreversible
Active subscriptions must be canceled separately through the App Store.
Children's Privacy
Expound does not knowingly collect personal information from children under the age of 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will promptly delete it.
Security
We use industry-standard security measures to protect your data, including encrypted connections (HTTPS) for all data transmission and secure authentication through Supabase.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated effective date. Continued use of the App after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
